About our project

As women become mothers for the first time, a lot of things can change. Relationships within families can shift, and there are new concerns about employment and benefits. At the same time, women might start to interact with all levels of government in new and different ways.

Equally important is the role of leisure in the transition to motherhood, since leisure can have a positive impact on individuals, families and communities, and leads to increased well-being, family cohesiveness, social support and community engagement. Yet, despite its numerous benefits, leisure is increasingly challenging for new mothers.

We are a group of like-minded researchers who have come together to learn more about women’s wellbeing as they experience the transition to motherhood for the first time. If you are becoming a mother for the first time and live in either Toronto or Montreal, we are interested in learning about your experience. We believe your story will be valuable in understanding this complex and important event in women’s lives. Click through here to learn more about participating in our project!

Our research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
